Three things to check before you book. Two minutes in the driveway, and it saves turning up with the wrong hitch.
The ball on your hitch
You need: 2-5/16 in
The size is stamped on the top of the ball. A 2 in ball is the common one and it will not hold this trailer. The coupler sits on it looking closed and lifts straight off over a bump. The two are only 5/16 of an inch apart, so they look almost identical: read the stamp rather than eyeing it. If yours is the 2 in, a 2-5/16 is about $20 at any trailer shop and swaps with one wrench.
The plug on your bumper
You need: 7-way round
A round socket with seven pins in it and a flip-up cover, usually beside or below the hitch. The flat 4-pin one runs lights only and cannot run the brakes. Most trucks with a factory tow package already have the 7-way.
A brake controller in the cab
You need: Yes, because it has electric brakes on all four wheels
A small box or dial under the dash near your right knee, or a button and a display in the dash on newer trucks. Most three-quarter ton and larger have one, and many half-tons with a factory tow package do too, but check rather than assume. Without it you have no trailer brakes at all, and eleven thousand pounds does not stop on the truck's brakes alone.

The two numbers that decide whether your vehicle can take it. Worth two minutes before you book, and worth a phone call if either one is close.

The deck is 7 ft between the wheel wells, and that is usually what decides whether a machine fits rather than the weight. Measure across your tracks or tires at their widest and compare.

Before you book
Does my insurance cover it? How clean does it have to come back? What if it breaks down out there? What if I bring it back late?
Is there a tracker on it? Yes, and we would rather you heard it from us. Every trailer has a GPS tracker on it. It records where the trailer is, when it moves and how fast, the whole time it is out. We use it to find one that has been stolen, to tell when it actually left and came back, and to answer a question about either without anybody having to take a guess. It is not there to watch you, we do not pass any of it on, and the only thing we ask is that you leave it alone.
How it works
It isn't an instant booking, and that is on purpose. Every rental is checked against the calendar, and a person confirms it before anything is promised.
- You ask. Pick your dates and answer a couple of questions about the tow. The dates are held from that moment, and nothing is charged.
- You get the price on the next screen, worked out from the rates above. Anything unusual we look at and come back to you on, usually the same day.
- You accept, then do three things on your own booking page: driver's licence, insurance, rental agreement.
- We confirm it. Payment is normally by Interac e-Transfer. Card is possible; first-time renters may be asked for a temporary hold.
- You pick it up. The lockbox code appears on your booking page shortly before pickup, and the keys are in the box.
Picking it up
Most pickups are contactless. The keys are in a lockbox and the code is on your booking page, so you can collect early in the morning or late in the evening without waiting on anybody. If you are coming at a time that suits us both, one of us will come out and walk around the trailer with you. Ask when you book and we will tell you which it will be.
What it costs if something goes wrong
Late returns, cleaning, damage and cancellations all have a set price, and every one of them is written into Schedule C at the bottom of the rental agreement. You read it and sign it before you collect the trailer, so nothing gets invented at the counter.
